For years, cruising and environmental consciousness seemed like an unlikely pairing. Images of smoke-belching funnels, ocean waste, and overcrowded ports gave the industry a well-deserved reputation as one of travel's dirtiest habits. But the tide is turning, and faster than many people realize.
In 2026, a growing number of cruise lines are making genuine, measurable commitments to sustainability: swapping out heavy fuels for cleaner alternatives, eliminating single-use plastics, revolutionizing onboard waste management, and even rethinking how food is sourced and served. Some are doing it better than others, and a few are doing it remarkably well.
Here's a look at the cruise lines leading the way and what to look for when choosing an eco-conscious trip at sea.
The Leaders: Cruise Lines Setting the Standard
1. Hurtigruten & HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions)
Hurtigruten brought the first cruise line ban on single-use plastics in 2018 and banned heavy fuel oil back in 2009, well ahead of the industry curve. By spring 2025, all seven ships from the Norwegian Coastal Express run on biofuel.
The commitment doesn't stop at fuel. Hurtigruten partners with local farms, bakers, and producers around Norway and even provides farmers with compost made from food waste generated onboard. Also, crew uniforms are made from recycled fishing nets.

2. Ponant
France's luxury expedition line Ponant comes in at an impressive second place. Ponant rolled out an emissions-slashing hybrid expedition ship running on LNG and electric battery power called Le Commandant Charcot and has plans for a "zero-impact" ship. The first cruise line to achieve Green Marine certification, Ponant also offsets 100% of its emissions.
All Ponant ships have shore-to-ship power connections in port, single-use plastics and disposables are banned, and the cruise line conducts environmental impact studies before designing any itinerary.

3. Virgin Voyages
A favorite cruise line for many of my clients, Virgin Voyages took a bold approach from the very beginning. Virgin built sustainability into the brand's DNA rather than retrofitting it. The line's ships are modern and highly energy-efficient, but it's the operational choices that stand out. There are no buffets onboard, a deliberate decision to reduce food waste. Single-use plastics are entirely banned across the fleet. The line also purchases carbon offsets to address the emissions it cannot yet eliminate.
Virgin Voyages earned an "A" for transparency on Friends of the Earth's Cruise Line Report Card, based on the line's willingness to provide detailed information about environmental practices and a C- for their overall rating. For travelers who want a stylish, adults-only experience without as much environmental guilt, Virgin Voyages is a compelling choice.

4. Disney Cruise Line
Disney might seem like an unlikely sustainability champion, but the family-favorite line has invested heavily in cleaner operations. Disney's newer ships run on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which reduces sulfur oxide emissions by up to 99% compared to traditional heavy fuel oil. Disney Cruise Line has embraced eco-friendly practices, emphasizing energy efficiency and waste reduction. Their commitment to recycling, eco-friendly cleaning products, and water conservation demonstrates their dedication to environmental stewardship.
Disney also earned top marks for transparency from Friends of the Earth, making it one of the more accountable mainstream lines for families who want to travel responsibly.
5. Silversea Cruises
Silversea brings a luxury expedition philosophy to sustainability. The line has invested in advanced wastewater treatment systems that exceed international standards, and has signaled a commitment to emerging technologies, including upcoming hydrogen fuel cell technology, that could reshape the future of clean cruising. For travelers who want premium, small-ship experiences in remote destinations, Silversea is working to ensure those destinations remain pristine.

Honorable Mentions: Lines Making Real Progress
Not every cruise line has reached the top tier, but several are investing meaningfully in a greener future:
Royal Caribbean is investing in fuel cell technology and runs a well-regarded "Save the Waves" waste management program. Royal Caribbean focuses on emission reduction, waste management, and sustainable sourcing.
MSC Cruises is targeting net-zero and launched the MSC Euribia, one of the greenest large ships afloat. The MSC Euribia is powered by LNG.
Viking continues to make moderate but consistent gains in environmental efficiency across its ocean and river fleet. Their overall rating with Friends of the Earth's Cruise Line Report Card is a solid C, which is higher than many of the other cruise lines.

What to Look For When Choosing an Eco-Friendly Cruise
Not all green claims are equal. When researching your next voyage, here are the features worth prioritizing:
LNG Propulsion: Liquefied Natural Gas dramatically cuts sulfur oxide and particulate emissions compared to traditional heavy fuel oil.
Shore Power Capability: Ships that can plug into local electricity grids while in port eliminate the need to run engines at the dock, a significant source of port-city air pollution.
Advanced Wastewater Treatment: Look for lines whose systems go beyond minimum international standards for how water is treated before discharge.
No Single-Use Plastics: A genuine fleet-wide ban, not just a pilot program, signals real commitment.
Transparency: Lines that willingly share detailed environmental data with watchdog organizations like Friends of the Earth are generally the ones with something worth sharing.
The Bottom Line
Sustainable cruising is no longer a niche concept. It’s becoming a competitive differentiator. There are countless options for cruise lines and not every line was evaluated in this brief overview. The ones profiled here have demonstrated that environmental responsibility and exceptional travel experiences can occur together. For brands not mentioned here, research is key to making an informed decision. Evaluate the measures listed in this article to determine if the brand aligns with your priorities.
With all of that being said, cruising still has a long way to go in improving eco-friendliness and may not be the best choice for travelers who are looking to make the smallest eco-footprint possible. For these travelers, I would recommend regional travel, eco-lodges or even train travel vacations.
As a traveler, your choices send a signal. Booking with lines that are genuinely investing in a cleaner future is one of the most direct ways to support the shift the industry needs to make. The ocean deserves it, and so do the generations who'll want to sail it after us.
